How to Get Great Photos of Your Dog

Do you have a hard time getting good photos of your furry best friend? We can help! Read on as a local Oconomowoc, WI veterinarian tells you how to get great pictures of your dog.

Get Fido’s Attention

If your canine buddy is more interested in sniffing grass than getting his photo taken, you may need to get his attention. Try using a squeaky toy. Or, download an app made just for taking pet photos. Many of these have sound effects that will catch your furry friend’s attention.

If your pup is a furry bundle of energy, you may have to use a quick shutter speed to get good photos of him in action. Using high shutter speeds tends to work better outdoors, where there is more light. As far as the flash, you may need it indoors, but you will likely find better results by turning it off for outdoor shots.

Get Lots of Photos

Take lots of pictures! Even if you think you got a great shot, keep snapping.

Editing can make a world of difference. Don’t be afraid to play with settings, such as saturation, brightness, contrast, and red-eye removal. An average shot may become one of your favorites after a bit of polish.

Say Cheese!

Doggy smiles can make for some great pictures! Before taking pictures, indulge your pup with a fun play session. This can really get that tail wagging, and can increase your odds of capturing Fido with that adorable grin on his furry face.

Take pictures from a variety of different angles. You may want to kneel down, so you can get some pictures from Fido’s eye level.

The right background can make a huge difference. If Fido is pale, shoot him against a darker background. If your canine pal has dark fur, you will want to put him in a lighter setting.

To take advantage of beautiful natural light, have your doggy photo shoot at dusk or dawn, when the daylight has a golden quality.

Dog Shaming

Man’s Best Friend has some adorable—and hilarious—habits. Make a small sign describing one of Fido’s cute quirks, and use it as a photo prop for a silly pic.
