Winter Cat Care

January 15, 2017

Are you already dreaming of spring, or perhaps planning a vacation in a warmer climate? Wisconsin winters are definitely no joke! Your kitty may have a fur coat on, but she is still susceptible to the effects of cold weather. Here, an Oconomowoc, WI vet discusses winter kitty care.

Beds

Did you know that cats sleep even more than usual in dreary weather? While we’re not entirely convinced that our feline pals need all that shuteye, we do know that sleeping cats are absolutely adorable. Make sure your drowsy furball has plenty of soft beds to snooze in.

Grooming

Cats are great about keeping themselves clean, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use a helping hand sometimes. Brushing your kitty regularly will keep her looking adorable, and can help reduce hairballs. It’s also good for her circulation. Plus, removing that dead fur will increase the insulating quality of Fluffy’s pretty coat, keeping her warmer.

Keep Kitty Safe

Many of our feline friends really like going outdoors. Unfortunately, the Great Outdoors can be very dangerous for a little furball. Kitties that go outside are in danger from cars, predators, chemicals (especially antifreeze), and other hazards. Cold weather can also be very dangerous to Fluffy: outdoor cats are at risk of getting caught in bad weather, and/or getting frostbite on their ears, tails, or toes. We recommend keeping your furry friend safe and sound indoors. If you let your pet out, make sure she has a good emergency shelter, and bring her in at night and whenever bad weather is approaching.

Hazards

Winter also brings some indoor hazards for kitties. Scented candles, fireplaces, potpourri burners, and space heaters can all be dangerous to our four-legged friends. Keep these things well away from those furry paws!

Senior Cats

Older cats often get very stiff and sore in cold weather. If Fluffy is in or near her golden years, she may benefit from pain management treatments. Certain supplements, such as fish oil, may also be helpful to your feline pal. Ask your vet for specific information.

Purrs

It’s always nice to settle in with a purring cat and a good book or movie when it’s snowing out. Fluffy makes a great lap warmer! Enjoy some cozy snuggle time with your furball.
