Helping a New Kitty Adjust

March 1, 2017

Are you adopting a new cat? Congratulations! We love seeing kitties go to loving forever homes. Change can be scary for cats, so you’ll want to take some precautions to help your furry pal get started out on the right paw in her new domain. Here, an Oconomowoc, WI vet offers tips on helping your feline buddy adjust.

Shopping

Before you bring your new cat home, you’ll need to pick up some supplies. Your checklist should include dishes, bedding, treats, toys, and, of course, a litterbox and litter. If you know what Fluffy has been eating, get that same brand at first. If you make any changes to your pet’s diet, do so slowly, over the course of several days. Sudden changes could upset your kitty’s tummy.

Safe Haven

Put everything in a quiet back room at first, especially if you have other pets. This will give your cat a safe, comfy place where she can relax and settle in. If Fluffy will be an only pet, you won’t have to keep her quarantined very long. If you have other furkids, make introductions slowly and carefully. First impressions are a big deal to kitties! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Care

A trip to the vet’s is definitely in order. Fluffy will need a thorough exam. If your kitty hasn’t been microchipped and spayed or neutered, we recommend getting this done ASAP. You’ll also want to make sure your furball is current on her vaccines and parasite control products. While you’re there, get some tips on your new pet’s diet, grooming, and care needs.

Kitty Comforts

Offer Fluffy lots of toys and comfy napping spots, including at least one with a good window view. We also recommend getting some cat furniture and a scratching post.

Letting Fluffy Adjust

Cats all have their own purrsonalities. Some furballs will immediately make themselves at home, and will waste no time hopping into your lap. Others will need more time to adjust. Don’t force attention on Fluffy. Talk to her, play with her, and offer her toys and treats, but let her decide when it’s time for snuggles. Just focus on offering your feline buddy great TLC, and giving her a safe haven. You’ll have that little motor going before you know it!
