Doggy Dental Care

June 1, 2017

Did you know that dogs can suffer from many different dental conditions? Dental problems are just as painful and dangerous for dogs as they are for people! However, Fido can’t pick up the phone to call a dentist, so it’s up to you to keep an eye out for signs of trouble. Here, a local Oconomowoc, WI vet discusses doggy dental woes.

Common Issues

Gum disease is a very common issue among our canine companions. In fact, over 80 percent of adult dogs are afflicted! Gum disease is painless and asymptomatic at first, but don’t be fooled: this is a very dangerous condition! The infection can be spread from your pet’s mouth to his vital organs, and can contribute to some very serious problems, such as heart disease. Fido can also be afflicted by other issues, such as loose, cracked, or misaligned teeth; infections; and abscesses. Ask your vet for more information.

Signs of Trouble

Although dogs aren’t known for having winter-fresh breath, if your canine pal’s affectionate kisses make you gag, your pet may need his choppers checked: bad breath is a very common sign of dental trouble in dogs. Fido may also not feel much like playing with his favorite doggy toy if his teeth hurt. Excessive or stringy drool is another red flag, as is visible tartar buildup. Understandably, dental trouble can also make our furry friend a bit grumpy, and can even cause them to have trouble eating.

Veterinary Care

Your pooch should have his choppers examined at least once a year, but if you notice any of the symptoms listed above, contact your vet immediately. When treating doggy dental trouble, the focus isn’t on giving your furry buddy a perfect smile: Fido will still be adorable with crooked teeth. Instead, the objective is to treat problems that can cause pain, infections, and/or health problems.

Home Care

Proper home care is also very important. Brushing Fido’s choppers is a great way to keep your pet’s mouth healthy. If your canine buddy won’t sit still long enough for you to brush his teeth, ask your vet for advice on giving him dental-formula treats, chews, and food. Last but not least, make sure your pup always has fresh water and suitable chew toys.
