4 Reasons to Play With Your Cat Regularly

March 15, 2018

As we all know, cats are very frisky when they are little. There are few things cuter than a playful kitten with a new toy! However, as Fluffy ages, she will slow down, and start spending more time napping and less time pouncing on catnip mice. Playing with your cat regularly is a great way to keep her active! In fact, fun play sessions are very beneficial to kitties. Here, an Oconomowoc, WI vet lists some great reasons to play with your cat.

Exercise

If there’s one thing cats take seriously, it’s their napping schedules. While most kitties sleep about 14 to 16 hours a day, Fluffy can spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing. Although sleeping cats are adorable, unfortunately, catching Z’s doesn’t burn anywhere near as many calories as catching mice does. A fun play session will get your drowsy pet off the couch and moving, which is great for her physically.

Mental Stimulation

While it may seem like Fluffy really enjoys doing as little as possible, cats can get bored and restless with no entertainment options. Playing can help keep your pet from getting bored. It’s also great for her mind. After all, kitties have to concentrate to time those pre-pounce butt wiggles just right. This offers your furball beneficial mental stimulation, which can help keep her mind healthy as she ages.

Bonding

It’s important to make sure Fluffy has plenty of toys, but she’ll find playtime much more fun if you are involved. When you take time to hold a wand toy or laser pointer for your pet, she’ll know that you’re doing something special for her, and will feel loved and pampered. Don’t be surprised if your feline overlord thanks you with cuddles or purrs when playtime is over! (Then again, Fluffy may just ignore you. With cats, you just never know.)

Burn Excess Energy

Do you have a furry ball of zoom on your hands? A fun play session will help your kitty burn off excess energy. After a vigorous round of Catch The Red Dot , Fluffy will be a bit tired. We probably don’t have to tell you what happens when cats get tired. Suffice it to say, cats are much less prone to making mischief when they sleeping.
