Spring Cleaning Tips for Pet Parents

May 1, 2018

Spring is finally here! As the warm weather returns, many of us will soon be tackling some seasonal cleaning chores. Don’t forget about your pet’s things! An Oconomowoc, WI vet discusses spring cleaning for pet parents in this article.

Pet Bedding

This is a great time to give your furry buddy’s bedding a good cleaning. Most pet beds are machine washable. Just be sure to use hot water and unscented soap. Beds that are too big for the washing machine can be vacuumed.

Toys

Go through your furry pal’s toys. (Note to dog owners: you may want to do this while Fido is sleeping or out in the yard.) Discard and replace anything that is worn, stained, or ripped. Anything else can be washed. Stuffed animals and tennis balls are generally machine washable. Rubber and plastic toys, such as Kong toys, can go right into the dishwasher. Use a toothbrush to remove grime, and then put it in the dishwasher on the hot cycle. You don’t need to add soap: the steam and water will clean and disinfect your pet’s toys. For rope toys, remove metal pieces, soak the toy in water, and put it into the microwave for about a minute on high.

Perishables

Check your four-legged pal’s food, treats, and medicine. Throw away anything that is past its expiration date.

The Furkid

Has it been a while since Fido had a bath? If so, it’s time to give your pup a good scrubbing. Be sure to brush him and trim his claws first. You may also want to put a rubber mat down in the tub. If you tend to get soaked whenever you bathe your pooch, get a clear shower curtain. Cut two slits in it, about shoulder-width apart. Use these as armholes. You’ll be able to see what you’re doing, but you won’t get completely drenched.

The House

If you have a pet, regular vacuuming is a must. This will remove dead fur and dander from your home. It’s will also help fight flea infestations. We recommend vacuuming high-traffic areas and your pet’s favorite spots daily. Follow up with more thorough weekly cleanings. You may also find it worth your while to invest in a steam cleaner!
