Caring for a Small Dog

September 15, 2018

Is your canine buddy a smaller dog? Little dogs can make very adorable and loving pets. Since many small breeds have been bred as companions, they are often quite cuddly, and love to sit on their owners’ laps. However, while Fido’s basic needs—food, shelter, and veterinary care—will be the same as any other pup’s, you may need to customize your pet’s care routine. A local Oconomowoc, WI vet discusses small dog care below.

Food

Obesity is a common issue with little dogs. Even giving Fido an extra ten calories a day can cause him to gain a pound a year. That’s a lot for smaller pooches! Follow your vet’s recommendations, including serving sizes and suitable treats. It’s also important to choose a brand that is specifically formulated for little dogs.

Toys

When buying toys for your canine friend, be sure to choose ones that are the right size for him. Your cute pet could seriously hurt himself with toys made for larger dogs!

Training

Little dogs often don’t get as much training as big ones. This may be because people assume that Fido doesn’t pose much of a threat, and therefore doesn’t need as much training. However, proper training is important for all dogs, no matter how big or small they are. Make sure your furry little buddy knows basic commands like Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . This can stop him from running off or approaching dangerous areas. It can also help keep your pet from getting too bossy.

Pet Ramps

It’s fairly easy for a smaller dog to hurt himself jumping on or off beds and couches. Set out pet ramps or stairs for your four-legged friend, to help him get around more easily.

Exercise

Like any other dog, Fido will need proper activity. However, smaller pups may be just fine with a daily walk. After all, your canine pal will burn quite a few calories just running around the house on those tiny legs. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Tearstains

Many small dogs are prone to getting tearstains. Fido is at just the right height to get dust in his eyes! Use cotton balls and warm water to gently clean your furry friend’s eyes.
