Tips on Choosing Fido’s Halloween Outfit

October 15, 2018

Halloween is just around the corner! Many people enjoy dressing their dogs up for this fun holiday. Fido has worn some adorable outfits in the past. He’s been a dinosaur, a taco, and a Storm Trooper, just to name a few. However, there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to dressing your dog. In this article, an Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some helpful tips on choosing your canine buddy’s costume.

Fit

Never put your dog in anything that is tight or restricting, or anything that blocks his field of vision. Your four-legged friend should be able to run, jump, sit, and lay down normally, without the costume getting in the way. You may want to take your pup’s measurements, and text them to yourself before you go shopping. That way, you’ll always have them with you.

Material

Choose a material that is breathable and washable. Keep in mind that Fido already has a fur coat on, so he could easily overheat in clothing. We don’t really recommend getting something with zippers, as they can catch in dogs’ fur. Avoid cotton and wool, as they don’t ‘breathe’ very well.

Decorations

Avoid anything with small parts, like buttons. Fido may try to eat his outfit, and could choke! Outfits with dangling threads are also best avoided. Costumes that make noise can also be dangerous, as they could scare your dog.

Fido’s Choice

Let your furry buddy have a say in his costume. Some dogs don’t mind wearing clothes, but others don’t like it. Don’t force your four-legged friend to wear an outfit. If your pooch seems scared or uncomfortable in his outfit, take it off. You can always just put a cute bowtie or bandana around his neck.

Doggy Comfort

Don’t be surprised if your canine pal only tolerates his costume for a few minutes. Time your night accordingly. (Tip: you may want to get a picture right away.) Once Fido is dressed, keep a close eye on him. If he starts panting, or seems uncomfortable, immediately take off his outfit.

Fun

Now for the fun part. Pick something that really shows your furry best friend’s personality. You can even look for an outfit that matches or complements yours.
