Getting Fido Ready for Winter

Winter isn’t far off. Your dog may already have a fur coat on, but that doesn’t mean he’s impervious to the cold. Actually, our canine buddies need some extra TLC at this time of year. In this article, an Oconomowoc, WI vet discusses getting Fido ready for the cold.

Dogs with thin fur often need a bit of extra insulation on frigid days. If Fido wears jackets, take time to go through his doggy wardrobe. Discard and replace anything that is stained, ripped, or worn. Wash anything you’re keeping, unless you did that in spring. You’ll also need to make sure that everything still fits, and isn’t tight, itchy, or constricting.

Snow, salt, sand, and ice can all do a number on your four-legged buddy’s paws. Stock up on pet-safe de-icing agents. You may also want to get some paw balm or wax to help protect Fido’s furry feet.

Bring your furry pal to the vet before it gets really cold. Winter can be especially tough on pooches with bone/joint issues, such as arthritis. Fido may benefit from pain management treatments, or even supplements. Ask your vet for more information.

Does your canine pal have a doghouse to hang out in when he’s outside? If so, check it over thoroughly, and make sure that it is clean and well-insulated. Fido’s doghouse should be raised off the ground a bit, with the opening facing away from prevailing winds.

Some of our furry friends need bigger portion sizes in winter. For instance, if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, he’ll burn more calories than usual just staying warm on cold days. Ask your vet for specific nutritional advice.

Make sure your canine companion has a comfy doggy bed to snuggle up in. Senior dogs and large breeds may appreciate orthopedic beds. If your pup has thin fur, he may like a heated bed, or a thermal blanket.

Your canine friend may spend a good chunk of winter snoozing in his bed. Take him for some nice long walks before the weather gets too cold. You’ll also want to get yourself some boots with good traction, so you don’t slip when walking Fido on icy ground.
