Safe and Unsafe Food For Cats

May 1, 2019

Is your cat a finicky feline, who often begs for dinner right meow , only to turn her cute little nose up at what you put in her bowl? Or is your kitty a furry little glutton, who will unashamedly steal your pizza the moment you turn your back? Although kitties have a reputation for being picky, it seems that not all of our feline pals got that memo. Some cats will eat pretty much anything! But just what is safe for your cute pet? Read on to find out! An Oconomowoc, WI vet lists both safe and unsafe foods for cats in this article.

Safe

Cooked, plain fish, without the skin, bones, or fat, is always fine for kitties. Fluffy can have most kinds of fish, including salmon, flounder, cod, haddock, herring, whitefish, and tuna, as well as shellfish, like crab, lobster, shrimp, and scallops. Most types of meats, including beef, steak, and hamburger are safe. Your feline pal can also enjoy some shredded deli meat, or some plain, cooked, boneless chicken, turkey, or duck. Cooked eggs, spinach, pureed pumpkin or squash, sodium-free broth, and cantaloupe are also suitable snacks.

Limited

Many foods are okay to give once in a while, but shouldn’t be offered daily. Tuna—which is one of Fluffy’s favorite treats—is one of these. Cheese should also be only given on occasion. This also applies to apples, peanut butter, bananas, and blueberries.

Not Recommended

Corn, bread, sugary foods, fatty foods, and processed foods are definitely not on the recommended list. Milk also falls into this category. If Fluffy likes milk, and doesn’t seem to have any issues digesting it, you may be able to give her a tiny bit—as in a few tablespoons—every now and then. However, it’s really just better to stick to healthier treats. Organ meats, like liver, fall into this category as well, along with fatty meats, such as bacon and sausage.

Never

Never give Fluffy anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; caffeine; mushrooms; alcohol; candy; or pitted fruits, especially avocados. Meat on the bone is dangerous as well, as are raw meat, milk, and yeast, and anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.
