Keeping Your Dog Hydrated

August 15, 2019

The Dog Days of Summer are officially upon us! One thing that is very important at this time of year is making sure that your dog is staying hydrated, especially on really hot days. An Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some helpful tips on keeping Fido hydrated in this article.

Water Stations

First things first: make sure that your cute pet always has fresh water. If you have a yard for Fido to chase squirrels around in, put water bowls outdoors for him as well. Clean the bowls daily to keep dirt and bacteria from forming.

Fountains

Your canine companion may enjoy drinking from a pet fountain. There are some really cute ones to choose from. Some even spray water when Fido steps on the pad. We probably don’t have to tell you how adorable this is to watch!

Water On The Go

Dogs love going places with their human pals. When you take Fido out and about with you, always bring water along for him. You may want to get a collapsible plastic bowl. These are lightweight and foldable, which makes them really easy to carry. Your canine buddy may also like a portable water bottle with an attached dispenser.

Snacks

Keep hydration in mind when choosing your dog’s food and snacks. Canned food has a higher moisture content than kibble does, which is one of its benefits. However, you can also add some water to dry food. As for treats, sodium-free broth is a great option. Or, get an ice mold for your furry friend, and make pupsicles for him by freezing kibble, shredded meat, cheese, and/or pet-safe fruits and veggies in broth or water. You can also make Fido some doggy ice cream out of yogurt, pureed pumpkin, organic baby food, and/or sodium-free broth. Ask your vet for specific advice, including safe and unsafe foods and suitable snacks.

Ice

Many dogs like chewing on ice cubes when it’s hot out. While you don’t want to give your four-legged buddy too many, Fido can have one or two on sweltering days. You can also drop a few into his water bowl. Another option is to freeze sodium-free broth in an ice cube tray. This is a yummy and healthy summer treat.
