Homemade Holiday Treats For Dogs

December 15, 2019

The holidays are officially upon us! Many of us are looking forward to those mouthwatering seasonal treats and dishes. Of course, our canine buddies are also very enthusiastic about food. Why not make Fido some treats? An Oconomowoc, WI vet lists some homemade holiday snacks for dogs in this article.

Biscuits

There are many ways to make dog biscuits. Start with a base, such as ripe banana, organic baby food, plain yogurt, sodium-free broth, pureed pumpkin, or peanut butter. You can mix and match these to suit your pet’s taste. You can add olive oil, wheat germ oil, liver powder, bacon grease, eggs, shredded meat, cheese, bacon bits, or other dog-friendly items. Use a cute mold to shape the batter into cookies, and then bake. Usually 20 minutes at 350 will do it, though some versions may take a bit longer. These also make great gifts for Fido’s friends! Put them in a mason jar, and wrap a pretty ribbon around it.

Meatballs

You can enjoy these too! The main difference between Fido’s version and ours is that you won’t add onion, garlic, or spices. Mix ground turkey, lamb, pork, or beef with whole-wheat flour, shredded cheese, chopped eggs, and parsley. Roll into meatballs, and cook at 400 for about 20 minutes.

Pumpkin/PB Bites

Mix pureed pumpkin with natural peanut butter, whole-wheat flour, and an egg. Divide the batter into small portions. About 20 minutes at 350 should do it.

Dognog

Eggnog is a classic holiday treat. To make Fido his own version, you’ll mix sodium-free broth with organic baby food and an egg. Put a dog biscuit on top before giving it to your pup.

Beef Yums

Use a food processor to combine beef, whole-wheat flour, eggs, and cheese. Pour the mix into a brownie pan, and cook at 350 for 20 minutes.

Jerky

This one will definitely get that cute tail wagging! Slice beef, chicken, salmon, or turkey into thin strips. Sweet potato slices will also work. Cook at 200 for several hours.

Tips

Be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for your pet. Some foods on the no-no list include garlic, onion, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; caffeine; avocado; and alcohol. Ask your vet for more information.
