How to Be a Responsible Dog Owner

September 1, 2020

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Fido is a wonderful pet, but he does need lots of great care in order to thrive. In this article, an Oconomowoc, WI vet offers a few ‘pointers’ on being a great dog owner.

Training

Training your four-legged friend to obey simple commands isn’t just a matter of petiquette. It’s also important for safety reasons. Plus, you’ll enjoy spending time with your dog much more if he’s polite and obedient. Make sure Fido obeys basic commands, like Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down .

Safety

Dogs are curious, playful, and, well, a bit clumsy. These traits can make a dangerous combination! Keep your pet safe and sound by taking basic precautions. Petproofing your home is important, especially with younger dogs and pups that love to chew or dig. If you have a yard, make sure that your fence is secure. We also recommend keeping Fido leashed whenever you take him off your property.

Comfort

Small comforts can really help keep that cute tail wagging. Make sure that Fido has a comfy bed. You’ll also want to keep up on his grooming needs, including dental and paw care. It’s also important to protect your furry friend from extreme weather.

Veterinary Care

Fido would probably rather play Fetch than come visit us, but proper veterinary care is crucial to his health. We recommend that all pups be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on vaccines and parasite control. Keep up with your canine buddy’s veterinary appointments!

Toys/Enrichment

Dogs are quite intelligent, and get quite bored with nothing to do but stare at the walls. Give Fido lots of fun toys, and take time to play with him regularly. Your canine pal will also appreciate going to parks and trails on occasion, so he can enjoy a change of scenery.

Food

We know, Fido will happily snap up anything you offer him. Don’t overfeed your pup! Offer him a  high-quality pet food, and limit his intake of fatty treats, like bacon. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes and snacks.

Tail Wags

Dogs need to feel loved to truly thrive. Spend lots of time with Fido, and indulge those adorable requests for ear scritches and belly rubs!
