Homeschooling With Dogs

September 15, 2020

Are your little ones learning from home this year? If so, your canine buddy may be more than thrilled with this arrangement. One of the bright spots of the coronavirus pandemic has been seeing how delighted dogs are to have their humans home more often. An Oconomowoc, WI vet offers a few tips on home schooling with Fido in this article.

Supplies

We all know that dogs love to chew on things. Many school supplies can be dangerous to a frisky pup! Pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, and other small or sharp objects are all hazardous. Keep these things out of paw’s reach.

Recess

Kids and pets both tend to do best with a steady schedule. Many of the schools that are offering online learning do have set schedules and specific class times when children must be (virtually) present. Your little one may also have scheduled breaks or recess. Try to line Fido’s daily doggy schedule up with this. Play and walk with your pooch at lunch or recess. That way, he’ll be comfortable and tired while class is in session.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts are both wonderful for kids. Why not incorporate Fido into some of these fun projects? Have your youngster write a story about your furry friend. They could also draw a picture of him, or maybe make him some homemade toys. Another option is to have your little one read a story about a dog, and then write a book report about it.

Homework

That old cliche about ‘the dog ate my homework’ is usually thought of as a far-fetched, fabricated excuse. However, it actually does happen sometimes! Keep books, papers, and other school items away from Fido.

Training

Could your furry pal use a bit more petucation himself? If Fido doesn’t obey simple commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down, carve out some time for teaching him. This can also be a learning experience for kids!

Treats

Our canine friends are actually wonderful friends and companions for children. They teach youngsters about love and friendship, and make great playmates and cuddle buddies. They’re also a wonderful source of comfort on bad days. Keep Fido’s tail wagging by paying him lots of attention.
