Adopting a Senior Dog: Shopping Checklist

November 1, 2020

November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! While we love seeing any pup get adopted, older dogs are often in desperate need of great homes. This is very sad, because their calmness, patience, and sweet demeanors make them absolutely wonderful pets. If you’re taking in a sweet senior pooch, you definitely have our support! Of course, you’ll need to make a run to the pet store. A local Oconomowoc, WI vet suggests some things for your list in this article.

Comfy Bed

Your four-legged retiree will need a comfy bed. Orthopedic beds are a great option for senior dogs. That extra support will help your new canine companion sleep comfortably at night. (Have we mentioned how cute older dogs are when they’re napping?)

Toys

Your furry pal may not be as frisky as he used to be, but he’ll still want to let that inner puppy out sometimes. Regular walks and play sessions will help keep him fit and active. Choose toys made just for older dogs. These are often softer on Fido’s mouth. Some light up or make noise, which makes them easier to track.

Treats

Yummy treats will help make Fido feel happy and safe. They’re also great for bonding! Check the labels, and opt for healthy treats that list mostly meat, fish, or chicken as ingredients.

Raised Dishes

Eating from bowls on the floor can strain Fido’s neck and back. Elevated dishes may be easier for your canine pal.

Pet Ramps

Older dogs often have difficulty climbing stairs or getting in and out of cars. Pet ramps or stairs can help keep your pooch mobile.

Grooming Supplies

Baths may not be Fido’s favorite thing, but he does enjoy feeling soft and clean. Pick up some doggy beauty products. You may also want to get some clippers with sensors.

High-Quality Food

If you know what Fido has been eating, get that brand to start. Changes to dogs’ diets should always be made slowly, and only after checking with your vet. Your pooch may also benefit from supplements, such as fish oil or glucosamine. Ask your vet for advice.

Dental Products

Dental issues are extremely common in older dogs. Get Fido some doggy dental products, such as dental-formula treats and chews, or perhaps an oral rinse.
