Bonding With a New Cat

November 15, 2020

Has a new kitty recently joined your home? It’s always fun and exciting when a new pet joins the fold. While you may be over the moon about adopting Fluffy, your new feline pal may be more wary about the situation. Going to a new house is a huge change for cats, and one that many of them find stressful and even scary. An Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some tips on bonding with cats below.

Safe Space

Cats feel safest in small, enclosed spaces. At first, put your furball in a comfy spot of her own. A quiet laundry room or bedroom is ideal. Make sure Fluffy has all the kitty necessities she will need, such as a soft bed, fun toys, and, of course, a litterbox. Give her time to settle in.

Let Fluffy Explore

Your feline buddy may feel more at ease if she can explore her new domain on her own terms. She may find a little nook to hide in for a while, and not come out until she feels safe. This is fine! Be sure to do some petproofing first, to make sure that your place is free of any potential hazards.

Don’t Force Attention

Cats can be very affectionate, but they can also get scared if someone picks them up unexpectedly or tries to hold them against their will. Let Fluffy approach you when she’s ready to be petted. With some furballs, this will take about two seconds. Other kitties are more timid, and will need time to warm up to you.

Sweeten The Deal

Want to win your furry buddy’s trust? Make her realize that she’s landed a pretty sweet deal. Start by offering her good, high-quality food, fresh water, and a clean litterbox. We also strongly recommend bringing Fluffy to the vet for a thorough exam. To really get that motor going, offer kitty luxuries, like toys, treats, cat furniture, comfy beds, and catnip. Offering your pet a few empty boxes will also help.

Playtime

Take time to play with your feline friend. This will help her burn off any excess energy, so she’ll be calmer after. Plus, Fluffy will really appreciate you taking the time to hold that toy or laser pointer!
