Valentine's Day Pet Safety Tips

February 1, 2021

The lovers’ holiday can be quite dangerous for our furry friends, so you’ll want to take a few s teps to keep your pet safe. Read on as a local Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some advice on keeping Fido safe and happy during Valentine’s Day.

Don’t Share Treats

At this time of year, even gas stations often offer boxes of chocolates for people to get their sweethearts. Unfortunately, those sweets contain many things that are toxic to pets, such as chocolate, nuts, raisins, and xylitol. Chocolate is a huge concern, as it can cause serious medical issues, and can even be fatal. Hard candies are dangerous as well, as they can add choking hazards on top of the other risks.

Put The Bouquet In A Safe Spot

A pretty bouquet can brighten up any room. However, many of them contain flowers that are poisonous to pets. Lilies, for example, are extremely toxic to cats. Other unsafe flowers include tulips, daffodils, and azaleas. (Note: roses aren’t poisonous, but they can still be dangerous because of the thorns.) You can find more information on safe and unsafe plants and flowers at the ASPCA website here .

Hide The Teddy Bear

This one mostly applies to dogs, as cats aren’t usually interested in plushies, except as potential napping spots. The issue here is that many stuffed animals have small parts, like buttons or plastic eyes, that are choking hazards to playful pets. The stuffing is also unsafe, as are internal parts like speakers or squeakers. If your pup loves stuffed animals, get him his own, and choose one made specifically for dogs.

No Wine

Even small amounts of alcohol can be deadly for pets. Keep wine and other alcoholic beverages away from your furry friend!

Be Careful with Candles

A candlelit dinner is a classic romantic Valentine’s Day option. Just make sure to keep candles in spots where your four-legged pal can’t reach them or accidentally knock them over. Wall sconces are a good option. You’ll also need to be careful with fireplaces, space heaters, and potpourri burners.

Get That Tail Going

Don’t for get to pick something up for Fido or Fluffy! A new toy or a yummy treat will make your pet’s day … and make for some adorable photos.
