Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

April 15, 2021

There’s a pretty special holiday coming up. April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! Quite a few of our patients are former shelter pets who are now living their best lives and, in many cases, being spoiled rotten. We love to see this! However, there are still countless dogs and cats in shelters, who only want someone to adopt them and love them. Here, an Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some advice on adopting shelter pets.

Benefits Of Adopting Shelter Pets

There are many reasons we love seeing shelter pets getting adopted. Not only does a cute dog or cat get a forever home, it’s also good for the person! For one thing, shelters are significantly cheaper than pet stores and breeders. You also get to choose from a lineup of adorable pets, and spend some time with your new buddy before deciding. And, as you may also find, adopting shelter pets just feels great. Giving an animal a much-needed second chance is a very beautiful and rewarding experience!

Getting Ready

Before you bring your new pet home, you’ll want to have some basic supplies waiting for them. You’ll need food, toys, treats, dishes, brushes, and bedding, to start. Fido also needs a leash and a harness or collar, waste baggies, and grooming supplies. Fluffy will require a litterbox and a scratching post or board. With dogs, you’ll want to choose your canine pal before going shopping, as you’ll need to get products that are appropriate for your pup’s size and age. Some petproofing is also a must.

Settling In

Being in a shelter can be pretty stressful for our furry pals. Your new pet may sleep a lot at first. Make sure they have a quiet place to relax and settle in. You’ll want to schedule a veterinary appointment as soon as you can, but otherwise, just let them adjust. Don’t force attention on your furry pal. Just focus on being kind and gentle. Some dogs and cats will immediately decide that you’re the best thing ever, and will be loving and affectionate from the start. Others are a bit more timid, and need time to settle in. That’s fine! Either way, you’ll be thrilled when you start getting purrs and tail wags.
