Causes of Anxiety in Dogs

Did you know that Dog Anxiety Week starts May 2nd? Many of our canine patients suffer from fear, depression, and anxiety, just like people can. The signs of anxiety may vary from pup to pup, but they often include things like whining, digging, chewing, pacing, tummy trouble, trying to escape, and soiling inappropriately. There are things you can do to help Fido cope, but first you’ll have to figure out what’s upsetting him. A local Oconomowoc, WI vet lists some possible options below.

Past Experiences

Unfortunately, not all dogs are spoiled and loved their entire lives. If Fido’s past wasn’t great, he may still be coping with trauma and fear from that. Dogs can also be anxious because of accidents or injuries.

Changes

Our canine buddies are very much creatures of habit. Fido can get quite distressed by major changes, such as moves or adjustments to his schedule.

Discomfort

Getting sick or hurt isn’t much of a mood booster for anyone This is true with dogs as well. If you’re not sure what is causing Fido’s anxiety, have your vet examine him. Fleas, ticks, allergies, and weather can also play a role here. Keep up with your furry buddy’s veterinary care, and make sure he is always clean and comfy.
