Frozen Dog Treats

May 15, 2021

Does your canine buddy like treats? If not, you may want to make an appointment, as that’s definitely a bit unusual! While Fido will usually be more than happy to snap up anything you offer him, he may be particularly appreciative of cold treats when it gets really hot out. An Oconomowoc, WI vet suggests some ‘pawesome’ frozen treats for dogs below.

Pupsicles

Get some long, thin treat or chews, or perhaps some doggy dental sticks. Put them in waxed paper cups, and add a bit of water or sodium-free broth, and freeze. Just pop it out of the cup when it’s time to give Fido his snack.

Doggy Ice Cream

You can find ice cream made just for Fido in many stores. You can also make some. You’ll need to start with some sort of base. You can use things like fat-free Greek yogurt, natural peanut butter, ripe bananas, purred pumpkin, organic baby food or gravy; or sodium-free broth. You can then add pieces of kibble; bacon bits; shredded meat; cheese; or pieces of safe fruits and veggies, such as blueberries, apples, and bananas. Just don’t use anything that contains harmful ingredients, such as garlic, onions, or xylitol. Grapes, currants, and raisins are also unsafe.

Broth

Sodium-free broth can make a great treat in and of itself. Pour some into an ice cube tray to make broth cubes for Fido. Or, just give him a bowl of chilled broth.

Frozen Yums

There are many different variations for this one, so feel free to mix and match. You’ll want to get an ice cube tray or a mold made just for Fido. Next, add some small snacks. You can use shredded meat and cheese, kibble, bacon bits, peas, carrots, chopped treats, or bits of deli meat. Then, pour water and/or sodium free broth over them, and freeze. Instant happy pup!

Cold Food

Another thing you can do is mix some canned dog food with water, and freeze that. For extra tail wags, add something really yummy, like pieces of kibble or even bacon bits.

Roll Over

Get a roll of precooked hamburger, ground turkey or chicken, or even sausage. Keep it in the freezer, and slice off a thin piece for Fido now and then. Done!
