Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

November 1, 2021

It’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! Many of our patients were adopted from shelters. While we are happy to see any dogs or cats going to great homes, we’re especially thrilled to see shelter pets getting second chances. The pets people adopted from shelters tend to be extremely loyal and loving, and are just wonderful animal companions. They’re also very grateful to those who adopt them. We’re also grateful for shelters for all they do to try to help and rehome pets. An Oconomowoc, WI vet lists a few simple ways to give back to these organizations in this article.

Volunteer

One of the best ways you can help local animal shelters is to volunteer your time. There’s always lots to do! You may find yourself walking or playing with dogs, cleaning up, helping with food, or even taking pictures for a website.

Donations

Monetary donations are always welcome. Animal shelters often run on shoestring budgets, and they tend to rely very much on the kindness of their patrons. Every little bit helps!

Charity Events

Shelters always need supplies, such as food, litter, and toys. Even dropping off a bag of kibble can help. If you’re a crafty sort, you can always make some toys or perhaps some kitty furniture. Just be sure to check the shelter website or call to find out what their current donations protocol is.

Fostering

You may want to consider fostering. Some pets, like young puppies and kittens, need overnight care that shelter staff can’t provide. There are also shelters that do not have physical buildings, and rely entirely on fosters to care for their furry wards.

Spread The Word

Another thing you can do is just spread the word about shelters. Even posting adoptable animals on social media may help!

Adopt!

Of course, the best way to help shelters is to adopt one of their pets. This is also a great way to find your new animal companion!
