Keeping Kitty Warm In Winter

January 15, 2022

Winter is officially here! Although our feline friends do have fur coats on, they are still vulnerable to the effects of frigid weather. A local Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some tips on keeping your kitty warm in winter.

Beds

You’ve probably noticed that Fluffy is pretty sleepy in general. In fact, your cute pet will probably spend the vast majority of the next few months napping, snoozing, dozing, and sleeping. Make sure she has lots of comfy spots to choose from. Pet beds are great, but kitties also like blankets or pillows placed in boxes or baskets.

Grooming

Did you know that brushing your cat regularly will help keep her warm? Dead hair, knots, dust, and dirt all interfere with the insulating properties of Fluffy’s coat. Take a few minutes a day to brush your furry little diva.

Keep Fluffy In

The Great Outdoors is always hazardous for Fluffy. In winter, snow, ice, chemical de-icers, cold temperatures, and even darkness all add to the dangers. Don’t take a chance of your kitty getting lost, hurt, or trapped. Keep your feline buddy safe and sound inside.

Playtime

Moving around can be helpful when you want to warm up a bit. That also applies to our furry friends! Make kitty playtime part of your nightly relaxation routine. Even a few minutes of chasing after that mysterious red dot will be good for your frisky little pet.

Food

Proper nutrition is crucial! Offer your kitty good, nourishing food. Some cats will need slightly larger portions in winter. Fluffy may also benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Litterbox

Make sure that your feline pal’s personal powder room is in a spot that is easy for her to reach and is not too dark or chilly. Depending on how your house is set up, you may need to put your pet’s litterbox in a different area until it warms up. Nobody likes a frigid bathroom!

Cuddles

There are many things to love about cats, but one of the best things about them is the fact that they are so cuddly. Fluffy makes a wonderful lap warmer. On some of those cold winter nights, just settle in and relax with your furry buddy and a good book or movie.
