Keeping Fido Fit

February 1, 2017

Is your dog a four-legged bundle of energy? Or is Fido basically a furry couch potato? Just like people, dogs are healthier with proper exercise. Read on as an Oconomowoc, WI vet offers tips on keeping your canine buddy in shape.

Playing

Playing is lots of fun for Fido, and is a great way for your canine pal to get some exercise. Spend some time playing with your pet every day. It’s also important to make sure your furry buddy has lots of fun toys to play with when you are out.

Walks

Regular walks are great for Fido. They not only help keep your dog active, they also provide him with beneficial mental stimulation. Just be sure to always put safety first. Keep your pooch leashed during his walks, and make sure that he obeys basic doggy commands like Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel.

Indoor Exercise

Fido may very well want to spend a chunk of the cold season napping, so it’s up to you to keep him active in winter. Fetch can be played inside, though you of course want to pick an area without a lot of breakable objects. You can also keep your pup moving by tricking him into doing stair runs: stand at the top of the stairs, and call him to you. Some dogs even enjoy walking on treadmills! (Note: if you want to try putting Fido on a treadmill, be sure to remove his leash and collar first. You also want to start your pooch out on the slowest setting, so he can get used to it.) Ask your vet for specific advice.

Exercise Recommendations

Some of our furry pals are super active, and love running, swimming, and/or jumping. However, not all exercises are suitable for every dog. Fido’s activity needs will depend on his age, weight, breed, and health. For instance, brachycephalic dogs, like pugs, can get winded very easily, and should not be encouraged to run. Smaller dogs don’t generally need as much activity as big pooches, as they tend to get quite a bit of exercise in just by running around on those little legs. Your canine companion’s exercise needs will also change as he ages. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
