It’s hard to believe that summer is already over. Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but it does also carry some concerns for pet owners. Here, a local Oconomowoc, WI vet goes over some of the key seasonal dangers for you to be aware of as the seasons change.
Chemical Dangers
In fall, many people treat their properties with pesticides, insecticides, rodenticides, and fertilizers. Your furry friend could ingest these simply by walking through treated areas and licking their paws! Antifreeze is another concern. It’s extremely toxic to pets, but unfortunately has a taste many of them like. We recommend switching to a pet-friendly brand. However, you’ll still want to clean up any spills immediately.
Plants
Autumn’s foliage can be breathtakingly gorgeous. However, many seasonal plants are dangerous to pets. Mushrooms are one concern. Many fall bloomers, such as chrysanthemums and autumn crocuses, are also toxic to pets. Don’t let your pet snack on wild flora!
Leaf Piles
In the grand scheme of things, a pile of leaves generally isn’t going to rate as an extreme threat. However, there are things to be aware of. For one thing, wild critters may be burrowing beneath them. Wet leaves can also quickly grow mold.
Halloween
As Halloween approaches, keep candy bowls away from pets. Chocolate, hard candies, raisins, macadamia nuts, and anything with xylitol in it are all unsafe. Also, be careful with decorations. Anything small or sharp is a hazard, as is anything with ropes or cords.
Heating Elements
Use grates in front of fireplaces, and put space heaters in spots where your four-legged buddy can’t knock them over. Candles should also be kept out of paws’ reach.
Cold
Temperatures can drop quickly at this time of year. Make sure your furry buddy has a thick, warm bed to snuggle up in. If Fluffy or Fido has thin fur—or no fur at all—you’ll need to provide them with comfy sweaters as it gets cold.
Darkness
The sun is already going down pretty early. Try to get Fido’s walks in before dark. If you take your canine buddy out at night, carry a flashlight, and stick to familiar ground. As for Fluffy, we always advise keeping cats in. However, if you do let her out, bring her in before dark.
