DIY Cat Furniture

July 15, 2016

Does your feline friend have some pieces of furniture that are all her own? If so, that’s great! While Fluffy certainly doesn’t mind getting comfortable on our sofas, it’s great for kitties to have some things they don’t have to share with their human servants. You can find some great cat furniture in stores, but if you want to save a little money, or just like doing things yourself, you can also make your pet’s things. Below, an Oconomowoc, WI vet lists some great DIY cat furniture ideas.

Cat Tower

Cat towers are great for our feline friends. Fluffy can use her tower as a manicure station, jungle gym, and napping spot. She’ll also gain a great vantage point, from which she can stare down at you with that smug, satisfied look cats do so well. You can easily turn an old stepladder into a kitty tower. Use planks to widen out the steps into kitty lounging spots, and then cover it in carpet or sisal rope. You can also use an old metal storage shelf, or even a bookshelf.

Pet Tent or Tipi

Cats love hidey-holes, because they feel safe and secure in small, enclosed spaces. You can make your furball a cute little pet tent out of an old tee shirt and a wire hanger in just a few minutes. A tipi will be a bit more work, and may require a trip to the craft store, but is also a great option. Look online for step-by-step instructions.

Window Seats

A good window view is definitely one of Fluffy’s favorite things. Install a wide shelf just below your windowsill, and then put a kitty bed on it. Use Velcro or two-sided tape to keep the bed in place. Another cute option is to get a rectangular wicker basket. Use sisal rope to attach the basket to secure hooks on the wall or ceiling, and then use nails to secure the basket in place. Add a soft pillow for a final touch.

Box Castle

Why not make your furry little princess her own box castle? Fluffy’s palace can be very simple, but you can also make it more elaborate by adding multiple levels, rooms, and windows. (Tip: this one makes a great rainy-day project for kids!)
