Grooming a Double-Coated Dog

Do you have a double-coated pooch, such as a Husky, Corgi, Lab, or Pomeranian? These fluffy pups are super cute! However, they do need some help with grooming. A local Oconomowoc, WI vet offers some advice on grooming a double-coated dog in this article.

Understand Fido’s Fur

Fido’s two coats have different purposes. The bottom layer insulates your pooch, keeping him warm in winter and cool in summer. The outer fur protects that insulating fur by keeping dirt and moisture out o f it.

Make It Routine

Keep up with Fido’s beauty care needs! We generally recommend brushing daily or at least every other day. This is especially important during shedding cycles, which usually happen in spring and fall.

Get Proper Tools

Start with a pin brush or wire brush. This will get the loose fur out of Fido’s coat. Next, use a grooming rake that is specially designed for undercoats.

Deal With Mats Promptly

If you come across mats or tangles, gently remove them with a wide-toothed comb. If Fido is prone to tangles, pick up some doggy detangling mist. If that doesn’t work, gently cut the mat out, using round- end scissors. Don’t let mats go: the longer you wait to deal with them, the worse they will get!

Plan Of Attack

You may find it easier to start at Fido’s tail end, and then work your way forward. Only go in the direction of your canine buddy’s fur!

Prepare For Fur

A few times a year, Fido will blow his coat out. Be prepared to deal with these heavy shedding cycles! Vacuum daily, and take your pup outdoors to brush him. You may also want to get slipcovers for your furniture.

Learn Some Hacks

A d amp sponge is very helpful at removing fur from your upholstery. A squeegee will also work well. You may also want to wear an apron when brushing your pooch. We also recommend keeping a lint roller—or ten—on hand.

Never Sh  ave

Don’t make the mistake of assuming that Fido will be cooler in summer if you clip him. This can seriously damage your pet’s coat!

Proper Nutrition

Good skin and coat health really begins with proper nutrition. Fido may benefit from taking certain supplements, such as fish oil. Ask your vet for recommendations.
